Quantum Relations – Transdisciplinary Experts Meeting on Quantum Mechanics and Meaning

Pontifical University of the Holy Cross, Rome, 12-13 December 2025

On 12 and 13 December 2025, the year declared by the UN General Assembly as the “International year of Quantum Science and Technology”, the ROR group promoted an experts meeting titled “Quantum relations” at the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross, in collaboration with the DISF research centre, the Faraday Institute for Science and Religion in Cambridge, and the Center for Science and Faith at the University of Copenhagen.

The aim of the roundtable was to connect different fields of knowledge using a transdisciplinary method and to gather useful insights, derived from the contemporary debate among quantum physicists, for the work of theologians and philosophers. The purpose of the experts meeting, in line with the guidelines of the UN resolution, was the exploration and implementation of knowledge shared across various fields in dialogue with quantum physics; however, stemming from this premise, the ultimate goal is the application of quantum science and technology for sustainable development.

Among the issues brought to the attention of the experts in dialogue were: the role of relations in the worldview emerging from quantum mechanics; their relative level of reality; and the consequences for human action. At the conclusion of the proceedings, an initial document was drafted to establish a common agreement among the participating academic institutions and to share the intentions of the transdisciplinary dialogue.
