As part of its seminar activity, the Markets, Culture and Ethics (MCE) research centre organised a new seminar series entitled Holiness Through Work: Commemorating the Encyclical Laborem Exercens.
The activity consists of 5 meetings, accessible free of charge, held from March to June 2023 at the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross, according to the following schedule:
- 28 March | The Bible and the Fathers of the Church on Work (Prof. Msgr. Martin Schlag, Prof. Giulio Maspero, Prof. Paolo Prosperi)
- 18 April | Good Work: Insights from the Subjective Dimension of Work (Dr. Michael Naughton, Prof. Msgr. Martin Schlag, Prof. Giulio Maspero)
- 9 May | Laborem Exercens: A Protestant Appreciation (Rev. Dr. Richard Turnbull, Rev. Prof. Paul O’Callaghan, Prof. Giulio Maspero)
- 30 May | Confronting a Technocratic Future: Women’s Work and the Church’s Social Vision (Dr. Deborah Savage, Prof. Ilaria Vigorelli, Prof. Giulio Maspero – postponed to date to reschedule.
- 21 June | Contemplation at Work: A Theological Conversation Between John Paul II and Josemaría Escrivá (Prof. Msgr. Martin Schlag, Rev. Prof. Cristian Mendoza).
The seminar series is based on the last publication of Msgr. Martin Schlag. To mark the 40th anniversary of John Paul II’s encyclical on human work, published in 1981, a group of globally-recognized scholars presents the critical aspects of this document and its purpose. These original essays revisit John Paul II’s approach to work in post-modern society and reconnect the dignity of the working person to a pursuit of holiness. Only when it is truly Christian can humanism accomplish the lofty ideals it indicates.
The seminar series is in partnership with the John A. Ryan Institute for Catholic Social Thought and Relational Ontology Research (ROR) group.
